We are pleased to introduce our new website, a more dynamic and user-friendly platform designed to showcase our work and engage with you, our audience.
Here, you’ll find:
Below, you’ll find a selection of new and past publications, reports, and analytical pieces that reflect the range of topics we cover. We encourage you to explore these materials to get a better sense of the issues we focus on:
• In this 2024 report, Strategic Autonomy for Central Asia: Drawing Inspiration and Support From the European Union, Harvard scholar and CAPS Unlock co-founder Nargis Kassenova examines the relevance of the concept of strategic autonomy for Central Asia, a region where it remains largely unexplored despite its prominence in European policymaking.
• In the analysis piece Central Asia’s Ticket to Ride Out of Trade Isolation, Tashkent-based economist and CAPS Unlock fellow Yuliy Yusupov looks at how Central Asia’s trade landscape is evolving in the wake of global disruptions. He explores the region’s continued dependence on raw material exports, the implications of growing economic ties with China and Russia, and the untapped potential of intra-regional trade.
• Climate Change Education in Central Asia: A Conversation with Peter Frankopan. In this interview, renowned historian and best-selling author Peter Frankopan shared his insights on the challenges of climate education and policy in Central Asia. Speaking with CAPS Unlock following last summer’s Almaty Climate Change Education Conference, he discussed the lack of region-specific materials, the role of policymakers and educators in shaping compelling narratives, and the potential of local and regional cooperation in addressing climate challenges.
This website is also the permanent home of the CAPS Unlock podcast, where we explore current developments in the region and invite experts, thought leaders, community leaders and others to share their stories and insights.
